Alvaro Petritoli
BACK
After studying for a degree in his home city of
Rome, Alvaro took a postgraduate degree in Historical Studies in Naples
before moving to London to do a Fine Art degree at Central St. Martins.
Preferring the light of a more northerly hemisphere and with more freedom to explore and develop his artistic ideas, he decided to stay and moved to the Sussex coast.
He usually develops ideas on paper and takes time over the backgrounds, using different methods to get the desired effect; phototransfers, soluble inks washed away with bleach along with traditional mediums of oil, watercolour and acrylics. His subjects are as diverse as whales and dragonflies, to which he may add writing or tiny pieces from old letters or books. Some of these paper pieces are the size of a postcard and can be made into collections of subjects or colour schemes. His aim is to create a network of recurring elements charged with symbolic value. Viewers are invited to envisage their own path and interpretations through the labyrinth of images.
He is constantly trying out new techniques and being inspired with ever diverse subjects which makes his work unusual and unique.
